Avoid lighting up your tires.

Don't make runs with your jack, DC air compressor, tools and steet tires in the back of the car. Racers won't take the stuff.

Yeah wheel spin is my biggest fear....I know doing a nice smokey burnout with slicks gets em sticky....is it really worth it with my street tires cause i cant afford slicks

no usually burnout wont do you much good on regular street tires. Just stay outta the water and line up at the light. Keep the tires planted the best you can.

sadly, this economy has hit the part time racers really hard. But, that is good news for those who have a few bucks. keep an eye out on your local craigslist. You'll probably find some decent drag radials mounted on those butt ugly salad shooters for short dollars.

You want to get your 60 foot to 2 seconds (less if you're modified) and won't be able to do it with street tires.

Don't worry about your reaction time or even your et, you're not there running heads up for money. You want to concentrate on improving your launch. When you get your time slips, make it a goal to lower your 60. The rest is just about staying in it or if manny tranny, getting your shifts right.

here's an example i found in 5 seconds in the s florida area. Check your area

try no burnout and see if she spins. mine did. lil burnout made a big diffrence. where i race if u dont have slicks they wont let u in the traction compound as the street tires ruin it for the slick guys. light the prestage bulb then inch to the stage bulb meaning try to get in the same spot on the line everytime. 1700rpm on the converter for me. as the tree comes down stare as hard as u can at the bottom bulb...as soon as it comes on let off the brake n hammer the gas, do not hesitate and trust me it will turn green. ur reaction time will be fantastic and ur buddy will be impressed. the number one problem i see with first timers is waiting for the light to turn green before hitting the gas. have fun. let us know what she ran.
