could it be my thermostat?
Hi my 94'z overheated yesterday the neddle almost got to the red. I could not hear the fan turn on, so i turn it on manualy. When i got the car it came with a switch to turn on the fan manually. So i turn it manually and the temperature started dropping. The car does not take long to heat up. it is always running just a lil below half line. One question is it bad if i always have my radiator on?? if i turn on the switch all the time even when i just started the car from beign cold? thanks
It could be your thermister resistor. It is a variable resistance potentionmeter that changes resistance withe heat. Sounds like that went bad. It is not bad to run your fans all the time, but I still like the motor to get up to operating temps before turning them on. It's also good to leave em run a little after you shut it off.
Your fans, unless they have been molested, are turned on & off by the PCM depeding on the input from the coolant temperature sensor. There are several relays involved, under PCM control, depending if your 94 is an early or late production model. In early production the fans were turnrd on & off one at a time depending on the temperature. On later production both fans were turned on & off at the same time, but the speed was changed depending on need. If the sensor is bad it will also affect the way the car runs, as the PCM alaso uses the same input to determine the A/F ratio.

First of all try a new cooloant temp sensor & see if the fans work any better, or you can leave the fans on manually. A lower temp thermostat would only make a difference at highway speed, as the fans need to be set up to turn on sooner to match the thermostat. Personally, I would like to find out why the manual switch was put on, and how it was put on, since when wiring gets molested starnge problems can be started.
it seems like they got a wired ready to manually turn on the fans. I saw one on the internet, i've changed the e-brake the other day cuz it was broken and i saw the wires for the manual fan turn on. I think its like an adapter i dont know if anyone knows about it i'll try to see if i can find out, and i'll try a new coolant temp sensor, were is the sensor at?? check it out this is the manual switch.
