How do I check the safety interlocks and where are they. Like I said, my security light has always been on

Your safety interlocks are the clutch switch only I believe on these cars. It will be down on the clutch petal some where.

Massey, would you recommend using a sledge hammer, or just a simple framing hammer?
Chip, next time the starter acts up, take a test meter and check power at the starter. The large cable should have at least 12 volts constantly (key on or off) The small start wire should get 12 volts when the key is turned to the start position (you'll need a helper to turn the key). Another thing to check for is a bad battery to engine ground connection.

The framing hammer causes less damage if the owner decides to get mad at the car!

What does my security light being on mean?

Security light means vats is engaged. It is not reading the proper resistance on the key or it is not operating correcgly. Most likely it is not operating correctly. I would try to bypass the vats to see if it is the problem. Vats is to bypass and a simple Google search will turn up a lot of tutorials

Before you go off and start bypassing everything try using another key. The keys becoming damaged or the tumbler getting worn out, either way the system is not the issue but parts of the system are. If you dont have a new key you can get one made based on your VIN from any GM dealer. If you need a new tumbler then you take the new key (which will not have a chip in it) and get a chipped key made based on your chip and the new key's pattern.
