Default Cam and Tuning questions

Hey i was wondering if you guys could help me out a little bit. Im looking for information about some of the cam options that members have put in their cars and have liked. Also i was looking for some horsepower numbers out of the hypertech III tuner and if it would really be worth the 300$. Im probably getting 3.73's soon so ill prob buy it anyway, but a little information would be nice.

cam selection depends a lot on the goals you want out of the car...strip car or daily driver with a little extra power or somewhere in between?

hypertech is not worth the 300 bucks you will plop down for it...a mail order tune from madz28 or pcmforless would be a much better route to go.

i'm assuming your automatic since you chose 3:73 gears which would be a good choice

there are several things you should do before you look into a cam. do all the necessary bolt ons such as a cold air intake, headers, y pipe, exhaust, gears(which you said) a higher stall torque converter if you're auto, probably some suspension work as well...then we talk cam. but for your curiosity...a popular off the shelf cam is a CC503 made my comp cams. good torque throughout and a good horsepower adder.

let us know a little bit more about your car and we can better dial in what we should be discussing!

My cars a 95 z28 6 speed. I was thinking about 3.73's but i wasnt too sure how quickly i would run out of motor since this will be a street car. I figured 4.10's was too high of a gear but this is why im posting oon here because im not sure. As far as mods, i have a cold air, magnaflow exhaust, catless y-pipe, and an intake elbow. The reason i asked MAINLY about the hypertech was for the speedo re-calibration if i got the gears.
As the cam is concerned, im looking for one that gives me a pretty "lopey" idle. I was looking into lunati voodoos.

don't spend 300 bucks just to redo the speedometer...waste of money. any mail order tune is half as much and can do the same thing for you.

i see you didnt' mention headers in your mod list...those are a must before you put a cam in. and you don't want a cam just because of the sound...what do you want the cars performance to be like?

Yeah i didn't mean that I was just going to buy the tuner for the speedo, i meant in conjunction with getting the speedo calibrated would the hypertech "tune" give me decent hp for the price.
Also im trying to get my car to run mid to low 13's. I havent ran it yet but im thinking with what i have on it is high 13's.
And yes i do not have headers on the car just yet, i had to do LT's on my buddys formula and it wasn't too enjoyable. So im waiting to do those

you will want to do those before you get a cam...otherwise your cam won't be able to breathe and you will choke it. headers aren't fun...thats why you should get some good ones that will last a long time so you don't have to do it again, haha

the hypertech is a waste of money...a mail order tune can do everything the hypertech will and is half the cost.

^^x2

The Hypertech is a $300 paperweight. It will get you ~3HP on an otherwise stock motor. If you want to run mid to low 13's get an intake and header back exhaust and some decent tires and you'll be there. You won't even need the gears for those numbers, my car is currently at a 13.6 with the mods listed in the sig and a horrible 60' time.

the driver mod would get you into the 12's slvr, lol

but like he said...full exhaust, a tune, a cold air intake should get you to the mid 13's

Nah, a driver mod would get me around 13.1 or 13.2 at best I think...with a trap speed of ~100 I don't think I could hit 12's without a set of dedicated track tires...but I have those, I just need a set of fronts, but for that I need $$$...
