The air pump doesn't hinder engine performance, and removing it won't give the engine a boost. Doing so would only give you less engine clutter. Oh, and your check engine light will go on once you unplug the pump. So if that light bothers you, you'd need to get that tuned out of your computer. Or, does anybody know of a jumper-wire trick to make the computer think the pump is still plugged in?

When the engine is cold, the pump injects air into the exhaust which helps to make the catalytic converter heat up faster. The cat is most efficient when it's hot. So the air pump speeds up the process to keep cold engine emissions lower than they otherwise would be.
