Default 97 Z28 rear end noise

Hello all,
I just got my Z28 2 saturdays ago and when I bought it the transmission was jerking in first gear hard and second gear a very little bit.

Now, last friday or saturday I let one of my buddies drive it for a bit and since my transmission is not shifting as it should, if you rip on it and don't let off the gas to let it shift it'll just keep pushing through rpms and then shift way beyond the danger zone, and that is just what he did. After that it started making a weird noise from the rear, kind of like something rubbing.

I replaced the rear u-joint but that did not make any noticeable difference. I made sure all the wheels were torqued down correctly. The noise only shows up if the wheels are moving, and if I am under 10mph then the noise is very quiet and sometimes you cant even hear it.

The noise seems to be getting worse because I am hearing a popping noise every so often when driving it.
If any one can help me out that would be great because I really got myself in a jam here, and I don't want to take it to a shop just yet.
Thanks so much in advance to any one that can help me out.

Since your buddy was the one ripping on the car, strap him up underneath the car and take it out on the road and have him tell you where the noise is coming from! When you say the trans is jerking, do you mean lunging back and forth, or slamming hard into the gears? It sounds like maybe a shift kit was installed, or something (tv cable) is out of adjustment? Transmission sounds or vibrationscan transmit through the driveshaft and make it sound like it's coming from the rear too. Isthe trans mount still good? A stock rubber mount isn't going to last forever, especially when beating on the car. The torque from the rearend puts a lot of upward force on the torque tube, which just happens to be mounted to the tail of the trans. A mount that hasripped loose will allow the tail of the trans to slam up into the tunnel (which you would feel and hear),and will alsocause a momentarymis-alignment of the driveshaft, neither of which is a good thing.

turns out the rear diff was all torn up. huge chunks of the gear teeth were just laying on the bottom and tiny chips aswell. the trans jerks hard from 1st to 2nd it slams into gear.

That is one of the benefits of a shift kit. Broken drive train parts. Not making fun of your problem, but that is what happens when you make the transmission shift too harshly without beefing up the rest of the drive train.
