yellow headlight issue
I'm looking to make my yellow headlights look new again. is there any way other than buying brand new lights to make the old ones look new again? I've seen stuff out there that supposedly restores them but nothing ever really seems to look as good as new. Is that the only way to get them to look as good as new is to buy headlights new again? I also see there are aftermarket brand new ones and they are GM new ones. are the GM headlights better than the aftermarket as far as looking OEM?

I'll see if I can find a picture of a headlight i did on my wife's former car a vw beetle. Cleaned them off sanded it down with 1000 grit sand paper and sprayed it with clear coat. Came out looking almost brand new. There were some deeper pits that didn't come out.

cant find the picture, but just like you would do bodywork sand the cover down smooth and spray it with a few coats of clear
|
do you use different grades of paper? what do you start with and what do you end with? do you polish it before you clear coat it or do you just sand it and clear it? I assume it's easier with these out of the vehicle or are they better off staying in to hold them better when sanding?

Maybe you can get this girl to give you a hand. lol
You should be able to do it while the light is on the car, unless your fender or bumper causes any obstructions. I would prefer this technique, I don't see that you're going to get a glass finish like this with a clear coat.. |
It all depends on the prep and make sure to set sand and polish out the clear. When i did my wife's headlights they looked new again, except for very deep pits that didn't come out. Basically I waited too long to do them. Didn't want to burn through the headlight.

Thanks. Ill try it before buying new. I'll post my results when I'm finished. How do I upload a pic to hear?
|
easiest way is to load it to photobucket resize it, and copy the image and paste it in your post. i usually resize mine to 600x450 so its big enough to see detail but not too big

Got it
