What's the real answer?
 

I've spent hours researching the "2.5 vs 3" and the "true duals vs y-pipe" for exhaust

What should I really do? Right now I have Pacesetter LT's and 3 inch cats and piping going to a 3 inch y-pipe over the axle. My ground clearance is awful. My sound is great.

What I want to gain is a little more ground clearance (any will help) and more torque if I can and maybe even a better sound. Am I really losing torque because 3 inches is too big?

What I want to do is keep the headers and the cats, after the cats run a reducer to 2.5 and then run true duals with 2.5 Dynomax race bullets dumped before the axle.

How's that? Also what about x-pipe vs h-pipe? Please tell me what you know, instead of what you have heard or what you think haha! Because Google is just full of hear-say!

BTW I have an 02 Ls1 Camaro with a MT. Lid, filter, catch can, LT's Pcmforless Tune, PandP throttle body, and 3 inch full exhaust with one dynomax race bullet. I'm prob around 350 to the wheels and any other power mod is far down the road.

3 inch is too much for duels 2.5 will be good as for the h vs x h pipes are better for scavenging meaning the exhaust is cleared better but your longtubes do a pretty good job of that x pipes give a different deeper sound as for torque the less restriction the quicker the exhaust can get out... id go with a 2.5 duel with an h pipe but don't forget a duel setup has to be custom done there is no out of the box setup

You won't gain much power going duals over y pipe at this point. A 3" y pipe setup is good for even some mild cams.

TSP makes a dual exhaust for the LS1, though it dumps before the rear axle and your ground clearance will be even worse. Kooks makes a true, full dual exhaust but is retardedly costly and will require you to relocate your panhard bar.

Flow rate is determied by the crossectional area of the pipe, so:

Single Pipe ------------------------------ Dual Pipes

2.0" 3.14 sq in -------------------------- 6.28 sq in
2.5" 4.42 sq in ---------------------------8.84 sq in
3.0" 7.07 sq in --------------------------14.14 sq in

I actually don't have any pics of my current exhaust but I don't think that's important. All you would see is a big fat 3 inch pipe hanging really low on the driver's side. And actually, the first shop that did my exhaust did a pretty bad job and you would see that too. And the y-pipe was fabricated by the shop that did my exhaust.

And I'm not looking to buy a kit. I'm having a shop in town do it. He quoted me 150-200 since I'll already have my cats and mufflers. He was recommended by a reputable hot rod shop so hopefully he does a nice job.
