The temperature gauge should read between 150 to 220 degree depending on a bunch of different reasons. The thermostat is a valve that controls the flow of coolant between the engine and the readiator. Is constructed to open and close at a certain temperature and tries to maintain a constant engine temperature. A thermometer, such as the thing they stick in your mouth when you are sick, measures temperature. Basically, the temperature gauge is just a fancy thermometer.
