Default 3.73 Posi

I have the opportunity to purchase the complete rear end from a 96 Camaro with a 3.73 Auburn Posi. I currently have a 98 with a factory 3.23 posi. I have heard that even though it is a direct bolt in, there may a problem with the ABS on one versus the other. Apparently the ABS on the 96 is controlled in the rear end housing, whereas on the 98 it is on sensors on the axles. I was told that if I use my axles, it would work and the ABS would still be functional. Does anyone know for sure and is there any advice?

The 96 uses a reluctor wheel attached to the differential carrier, the 98 does not have one, so even if you use the old axles the ABS still won't work.

I guess I'm confused. The 96 needs the reluctor wheel for the ABS but the 98 doesn't, so why wouldn't the 98 axles in the 96 rear end allow the ABS to work in the 98 vehicle. I understood the sensors for the ABS on the 98 were on the axles and backing plates. So if you used the 98 axles and backing plates the ABS should work on the 98?

I also think there are slight differences in the 96 LT1 axle casing and the 98+ LS1 casings. The rear brakes etc are not the same and dont bolt up without some messing.

The reluctor wheel is another issue, if you have 3 or 4 channel ABS on your car. Which you can get around with some fiddling about. You'd want to stay with a 98+ axle with same ABS configuration as your 'maro if you want the easiest swap.

OR can you not just take the gears or just the posi unit from this one?
