1999 SS...What's better..Turbo or supercharger?
Hey guys just taking opinions on which is faster and safer...turbo or supercharger?

Turrbo HP is free HP. Supercharger HP loss on a centrifugal is roughly 12-15%. On a roots, screw or hybrid roots the loss could be as high as 25-30%. It uses HP to make HP. As far as wear and tear on the engine, the roots style blowers are instant on, and hit hard while the turbo and centrifugal S/C need to spool up and they make power gradually, so less of an impact on the engine.

turbo runs off exhaust and creates little HP on low end, but in high end can create double that of a super. super like sated, takes HP to make HP, but is made more for low end snap, and is( in my opinion) best on engines that already have nice top end speed(v8s..) but they wont make near as much as a turbo(super also decreases fuel eco, turbo dont). you can always increase pulley size on super too, to make more power

A turbo doesn't decrease fuel economy from sapping power off the engine, but as soon as the turbo gets spooled, you're going to be using as much if not more fuel than if you had the super charger on there. Remeber, the more air you pump into the cylinders, the more fuel you need.
Oh, and there's no such thing as "free" horsepower, because that means that we could solve a world energy crisis with a turbo charger...Now a turbo is very efficent because it uses waste heat to create power, but they also decrease exhaust flow.

turbos tend to be safer because u get the boost slowly and u have less of a chance of blowin ur engine. say ur runnin 15 psi with a turbo u get it slowly and with a supercharger u get it as soon as u mash the gas. as far as fuel economy turbo is ur best bet cuz when ur just cruisin at low rpms the turbo isnt spinning fast so its almost like u dont have it. with a supercharger on the other hand ur always using it whether u want to or not. some superchargers have a pressure release valve type of deal where if ur stayin at low rpms it releases the extra pressure and saves a little mpg but IMO go for the turbo.

First off turbos are not free power. They just restrict the exhaust to lose their power versus a supercharger losing it through the belt system. Second Turbos will tend to cause faster break down of the engine oil because engine oil is used to lubricate and cool the turbo. Most turbo manufacturers require you to use full-synthetic, and even if you already use full synthetic the added heat and friction from the turbo will necessitate changing the oil more frequently. Third turbos or centrifugal superchargers will have a lag on the low end as the compressor spins up, then most have a very sharp increase to full boost once this happens.
Superchargers in general will use a seperate oil source so they will not effect the engine oils life. Roots and Twin-screw type superchargers will build boost from just off idle, but produce it in a very linear manner avoiding the sudden onset of boost of a turbo or a centrifugal supercharger.
In short depending on what you would like to accomplish with your setup there are positives and negatives of both. A Roots or Twin-Screw supercharger will give you a linear boost level from idle to redline. A turbos and centrifugal chargers are usually capable of producing higher HP number top end, but will lack severely on the low end to get them. So if you want a steady linear boos try to find a twin-screw or roots type supercharger. I have not seen one for your SS, but there might be one out there. If you want the high numbers up top and are willing to sacrifice the low end to get it then by all means go with the turbo or centrifugal supercharger.

Neither is the "better" combo, my boss/tuner here loves turbo cars whereas i love Procharger cars. I believe you can always make that extra 10-15% with a turbo car however.
