headers on the steering coloum

Default headers on the steering coloum

Just got done with coated headers on my 68. the headers are pretty much touching the steering column, or maybe just paper thin between the two. do you think this will rub a hole in the headers over time. I was thinkin about popping a little dent in my headers, any suggestions? thanks

I'm assuming you have a big-block?

maybe even a Hooker brand header?

its better to dent them. i had to dent mine in over 5 places. they werent coated but they were painted. if you dent them you might crack or chip the coating. then you might need to get them recoated.[>:]sorry i just wasted time here.

no its a 350 with summit coated headers. I heard good things about them for the money

Start the car up and listen for any rattling coming from the engine bay. If you can turn the steering wheel from lock to lock without any issues why worry about it?

your probly right. The steering column dosent move right there. I was just worried about the engine movement rubbing a hole in them. The motormounts have a little bit of flex to them, and the motormoves a little bit. probly no big deal. thanks

I love Summit Racing, but the quality contol for their brand parts sucks. they also usually have no real tech support or vitals on their own parts. with a small block and the right mounts, you should have no rubbing anywhere with a decent quality header

because he is talking about only around .005 clearance between his headers and column. even a mild engine on stock rubber (or even poly) mounts will twist more than that under acceleration. this will wear through the header in time, and it will also send vibrations up the steering column (that's why engine mounts have rubber) and could cause other little hard to diagnose problems over the longhaul
