exhaust popping
I have flows on a 96z and I am wondering what causes that popping noise when I hit the gas sitting still. It happens after the motor has reved. I've heard the popping before on full size trucks with flows but not that loud. Is it normal? Is it hurting anything?
Thanks |
RE: exhaust popping

RE: exhaust popping
The popping is caused by unburned fuel gettin lit off in the exhaust sytem. Most cars do it, but if you have quiet mufflers it is not noticeable. And is usually harmless. If you rev up an engine in neutral and suddently let off the gas, the throttle closes but before the computer shuts down the injectors some unburnt fuels dumped in the exhaust. If you step on the gas again, before this slug of unburnt fuel has a chance to get out of the exhaust pipe, the hot exhaust gases from the engine set this charge off.
FYI the fuel injection system shuts down the injectors until the engine gets down to idle speed at whic time the injectors are turned back on. You can get a similiar effect but much louder bang with a carburator if you turn off the ignition and turn it back on before the engine comes to a stop. Did that while driving by a traffic cop and he jumped and drew his gun. |

thanks, that makes sense. I guess I'll call my self Jeff Gordon from now on with unburned flames shooting out of my pipes.
