72 upgrade
Hello fellas my question is this. I have a newly purchased 1972 camaro with a 350 2bbl. Completly stock and really low miles. This car runs perfect with no issues whatsoever. It has decent power but I would like a little more. I am thinking intake, 4bbl and exhaust for now with maybe a cam later down the road. Is there a intake carb combo that will bolt right up to the stock stuff and what kind of increase can I expect? I don't plan on any track use. I am new to this kind of upgrade and need some direction...Thanks....

If I were you I'd start with an Edelbrock performer or performer RPM if you want to make a little more power when you install headers and a new cam and top it off with a holley 650. That should get you started and keep your motor up to par for when you get around 400HP should you ever decide to build for that much power.

say if you were to buy a performer rpm manifold, and bought a holley or edelbrock 650, you would probably gain 8-15 horsepower, especially coming from a stock 2 barrel. when you buy a cam, get one with a duration around 218-240. that will match up with the manifold. if you got a cam with that duration, you would probably be gaining around 15-25 horsepower.
if you are willing to sacrafice a little comfertable street driving, you can get a low-rise single plane manifold, and a higher end cam, around 240-280 duration. it will be a little annoying driving around street, but you will make more horsepower. try not to do that unless you plan on takin it to a strip a couple times a year, or jsut want a more unstable on the street, faster car. if you got a cam with that high of a duration, you would probably gain 20-30 horsepower, but be a little soggy at the bottom end, thats why its more difficult to drive on streets.

Thanks alot guys that gives me a great place to start. I will probably do the carb, intake for now and the cam later on down the road. What about the ignition.. Anything to be gained by up grading the distributor, coil, wires etc. Sorry for the novice questions I am use to doing mods on my diesel and it's a little more straight foward. Above all I want a good street driver with a little more go go baby. The car being all stock is sort of a clean slate to start with. I am still recovering from the cost of the car and just looking for budget upgrades for now... Thanks again..

RE: 72 upgrade
you can get an OEM blaster coil, with the dual plug ins or single, whatever your cars got. it will get better gas mileage and a not noticeable gain in power, but the car will be more responsive. the real difference is if you buy an MSD ignition. it fores more then one spark at a time. you will get a lot better throttle response, and gas mileage. top it off with 8.5mm ignition wires and you will be running wonderfully. when lookin at an ignition box, look for the MSD 6A or better yet, the 6AL, it has a rev limiter.
