Wiper Motor

Wiper motor will not run. Test light shows current at the plugs, but shows current even when the switch is in the off position, current even when the switch is unplugged. If I run leads from a 12 volt source directly to the motor it will run. Ideas on what the problem might be.

Without more info, year...delay system? It is hard to handle what you have going on. Depending on the year will make a difference on the switch you have. Column, or dash.

Wipers, for the most part are a ground controlled system so you will have 12 volts or battery positive at them at all times. The switch itself grounds the motor allowing it to run.

You need to verify that you have a good ground at the motor first.

my 78 had the same problem.i ran a ground wire from the wiper motor to the firewall and it took care of the problem.my motor has 3 screws attaching the motor to the firewall.one of the screws had a brass ground strip, that is where i put my ground wire

If you see voltage on both wires with the motor connected and the switch on, you have a missing or poor ground connection on the switch side.

Williesrepair, the car is a 1969 camaro, switch is in the dash, two speeds. There is a two pronged connector for the wiper motor, a second two pronged connector for the washer pump and a third single pronged connector. From what everone is saying sounds like I sould make sure I have a good ground. Thanks guys.

Yup, just as z28pete mentioned. Get a test light, check for power on both sides of the harness on the motor. Sure sounds like a ground issue.
