[X(] wise choice grasshopper you will occasionally get that smell if you load the cat up with fuel (mash the pedal to the floor) but should be mostly fragrance free, does it run ok otherwise?? water or other fuel oils in the gas can cause problems and if this is suspected id recommend a fuel filter change and if possible pour fuel filter contents into clear container and see whats in there kurt

The only other thing ive evr seen it do is sometimes when i start it up and im idling before i take of, the rpms jump a little. But stop as soon as i take off. Im really thinkin its the gas. Gas has gotten poorer quality anyway and this regular fuel just isnt burning quick enough.

Don't gut the Cat on a 98, you'll potenially create more headaches then solve a problem.

Once the Cat is gutted, your post O2 will run the same as the pre 02. Then you'll get Cat efficiency codes, possibly also have other issues. The fuel trims can change to a base line since the CE light will be on, other codes could crop up. O2 codes for example.

Just fix it, easier then killing it, and todays Cats don't rob horsepower like the older ones did, you can by aftermarket performance Cats to give you better power, but still run the fuel system and PCM properly.
