First you need to do some measuring, because fender clearance is going to be the determining factor. 4th gen wheels have about 7" of backspacing, 3rd gen is about 5.25", and 2nd gen wheels can vary, but wouldbe somewhere in the 3"-4" range. Putting a 3rd gen wheel on a 4th gen car is going to bring the wheels out further almost2". If you don't have at least 2" between your tires and fender lip now, then it won't fit. And, putting 4th gen wheels on a 3rd gen car won't clear the back side without at least a 1" spacer adapter.

ok ,well i could always go with a smaller tire anyway, if there is a problem with it being too close to the fender

Right, either a smaller tire, or one with a narrower section width. Not all tires of the same size have the identical section width. You can compare specs on different tires at tirerack.com.
