Stock '84 Z28 ... where to begin?
 

I'm trying to figure out where to start souping up my Z28.
It currently is all stock including the 305 (non-HO) under the hood.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Will be a little at a time. I was thinking intake/carburetor kit or maybe a full on top end kit (like those from Edelbrock) if I can scratch up that much in liquid funds.

I'd start but finding a 350 to build,collect the build parts while you drive it with the stock 305.:icon_wink:

I wasn't being negative. I was serious.

I asked how to work with what I have. I know I would be better off working with a 350.

I don't have one.

Hence my thread/question and the way it was worded.

All right, a wake up call for you.....1984 (unknown mileage) engine which started life as LG4 305 Carb induction. This beast when new had 150 Hp & 240 #/Ft of TQ and 8.6:1 compression WHEN NEW. With that stated you want to start modifying a possible wore out engine. Good Luck.. But if you insist, start with some bolt ons first:
1) Headers
2) Hi flow cat....Leave it on
3) 3" mandrel bent Catback Exhust
4) Tune up

So starting with these mods the results should be about the stock number or a few additional HP & TQ. Now do you still like the idea of spending money for a low return.

I went with a 350 crate to replace my wore out 305 TPI on my 1987 1ROC-Z28.

The point is that you'll waste your money trying to make a 305 have some go power.
350's are a dime a dozen so with a little looking around you can find a good runner and drop it in,at that point you are already making more power than the anemic 305 will with some work done to it.
Maybe pick up a donor car with a 350 engine and part it out, a big old Caprice wagon that is a dented up beater but runs good and has a 350 can be had real cheap.
More power off the get go,you can sell the boat anchor 305 and recoup some of the money spent and then if you want to start adding goodies you'll have a motor worth doing it with.:)

Heck if you buy something like this you could swap the motors and resell the car,might even get the 350 for free and a little labor.

Some reasoning and 'meat' in the advice.

Not just, "Buy a bigger engine." Of COURSE I'd rather have a bigger engine.

When I bought the car I realized the 305 was not helping the 'cause'. At the same time I know there are people out there that have done some decent work with their 305s.

Guess Ill have to just tool around in it the way it is until I can pick up a 350 or something.
