Default Questions on porting and polishing

I have a question about my set of heads and want to know if someone can help. I am currently getting my motor redone and the set of heads that are supposed to be going on my car is a stock set of LT1 heads cast #10207643. I was told by the machine shop that they were sent out for full porting and polishing and having the 202 and 164 valves installed. Heres my question. How can I tell if this is true? They told me that it costed $2800 and will flow better than the LT4 heads. Please help me in this situation I do not want to get taken advantage of.

if the heads have been ported you should be able to put the intake and exhaust gaskets up against the ports and there should be no overlap ,the gaskets should match the ports.if there have been polished ,there should be no casting flaws.they should be smooth and shiney.if they have the bigger valves in them, you can see it with a tape measure.2.02 should be a hair over 2".1.60 should be a hair over 1 5/8".this isnt very high tech but this is a fast check before you leave the machine shop if your not sure they done the work they said they done..hope i understood your question correctly.

ORIGINAL: bjames5

They told me . . . $2800

Now, that is the cost of the heads AND all this work, right?

If you already owned the heads, $2800 for porting and polishing and adding big valves alone seems excessive.

I assume you have heavier duty valve springs and retainers put on too (for that price a reasonable upgrade ought to be included), even though the valves are only a bit wider than stock they weigh more and you really need stronger springs.

Yes, that was for everything. They did replace all that I just don't remember the specs they said. I just wanted to know how to tell by looking at the heads. Is there something that with the ports shape or size. The shop thats doing the work has done alot of work for me and is telling me that this is a real good deal that I am getting. I am paying $3500 for a 383 stroker motor. It has a Eagle Steel Crankshaft 3.75 (cost $529), Keith Black pistons that was treated so they are extra smooth, Eagle Steel Connecting Rods, Hastings Power Flex Rings, Crane complete Roller Rockers, GM LT4 camshaft (not sure of lift yet), the heads have been reworked to flow better than the LT4 heads, Comp push rods, BBK 58mm throttle body, Intake ported to match. I will also be getting the basics new high volume oil pump, new water pump, plugs, wires. This also included removal and the installation of the new motor. He told me that the last one he did it pushed over 500hp to the rear tires with a 9inch Ford rear end. Does it sound like a good deal?

Sounds like an average deal to me. If the heads were proffesionally done they should have a flow sheet, otherwise how do they know they out flow an LT4 head? I would ask for the flow sheet.

That sounds like a killer deal. Are these stock heads, with the porting work or is it aftermarket?

These are stock heads that have been all redone. I have the car running but guess what? The transmission I got from Mad Dog is no good. It doesn't have second gear. They will be sending me a replacement but I hate the waiting.
