Pete nailed it on the head. Your distributor is 180° out.

Either pull your distributor and make sure the engine is at TDC (on the compression stroke) and put it back in the EXACT same way or pull your distributor and turn it 180° then put your wires in the correct place.

You're engine will still get spark even if it's 180° out. The flames you're seeing coming out the exhaust are because your engine is firing on the exhaust stroke and pushing that burning fuel out the exhaust ports.

Jetpilot,

I see where you're coming from but you're barking up the wrong tree. Just because a set of valves are lashed incorrectly doesn't mean the engine won't fire. We have to assume that they are done correctly or at least close and need to get that engine running. 50% ofso called shade tree mechanicsout there don't know how to adjust hydraulic valves properly anyway. Fortunately they are somewhat forgiving.

Motor isnt making enough compression, only ~60 psi in #1 and #3. The cylinders had a little lip in them from wear, and the motor was burning oil before we re did the topend of the motor. So... im guessing it might be a combination of lower compression from the larger sized combustion chamber of the heads and the crappy piston rings.

I somewhat know the procedure for doing valve lash, this is my first over head valve/pushrod motor that ive actually put allot of time into, im learning as i go for the most part.

I already have a 350 4 bolt main block that just needs pistons, i guess im gonna send it to the machine shop on friday to get it hot tanked, get oil galley plugs put in, bearings, freezeplugs, and etc put in for me. I wanted to make the 350 into a 383 but i wanna drive the camaro badly lol.

[X(] rat motor we knew we had fire he told us that much it just wasnt occuring at the right time or still had valves open to allow spark and flame out the tailpipe. real possibility?? as for chevys valve adjustment its almost the oddball as most are pedastal, disc or screw just wanted to check basics and not assume, as we all know what happens when you do. valve lash and fire are two separate things and i dont think ive ever suggested they are directly related. any good mech when faced with similar problems will check basics so as not to waste time chasing down others" I thought i did that right" type problems.

I honestly think it was the compression, but we did get it to run 2 times, and that was only at high rpm's, at the lower rpm's it would die. That would indicate that the valvelash was too tight correct? Well re did the valve lash, and nothing, except for the puffs of fireballs every now and then. If the timing was 180* out im pretty sure i would be having backfires through the carb like it did on the very very first try.

Its hei ignition. I pulled out the motor and trans about 3 days ago. The piston rings were pretty bad, and one of the bearings were spun like a ****.
