Default pinion preload

i am putting a 12 bolt posi in my 69 im using a used carrier new yokon posi used 355 gears the instruction talk about using heavy duty impact or large breaker bars to set pinion preload the specs call for 14 to19 foot pounds they devote a whole paragraph to how hard it is to set the load , with a crush sleeve is this that hard , i dont want to screw this up cause they recommend getting a new sleeve if you do

go buy a ft-lbs torque wrench. if you dont already have one. just make sure you dont cross thread anything and you shouldnt mess anything up. make sure you get a ratchet type torque wrench that clicks when you get to the set torque. and if you follow the instructions proper. you should be ok. but im sure someone else can give you a little more insight.

If youve never set up any gears, Id suggest finding someone who does them and see if they will lend a hand and experience. They can be very hard to do if you dont know what youre doing. Im not trying to sound like an ***. Your tolerances in the preload, backlash and pinion depth are very minimal. You can ruin a set of gears not doing it right.

[X(] as the previous guy stated there is some equipment and expertise you need to have to do this job right. i would also strongly suggest you pay and possibly watch or assist to get a good idea of what has to be done. although gears and bearings arent million dollar pieces if theyre ruined they do require some skill to keep from costing you dollars that could go to another cool part for the car kurt

WO,WO,WO, STOP!. I think you may have the wrong idea. I do this for a living. First off, do you even have a good pattern yet? You never set preload until you do final assembly. You have to assemble it w/o the crush sleeve and pattern the gears, so, you can make adjustments to pinion depth and backlash. Here's the deal on pinion preload, It takes at least 180 ftlbs of tourque to "BEGIN" to crush the sleeve. and you want 15 to 18 "INLBS" of "TURNING FORCE" to rotate the pinion when it's set properly. Bottom line here: you need one hell of an impact or a very strong, long beam ratchet, and a torquemeter that reads inlbs. Oil the bearings, seal and cursh sleeve real good before you set preload this makes setting it easier. grease the pinion yoke where the seal rides loctight the pinion nut and assemble.
