painting an oil pan?
I have one of thoes crome oil pans on my project motor (hope to be installed soon)and it is starting to look bad and wanted to know if anyone has ever painted one? If so how did you do it and what prep did you perform? What color?
Thanks, |
To get Paint to stick to chrome you have to sand all the shine off. The paint need to bind to something. The chrome has no pors so you have to sand grooves into it. We call it tooth. About 200 grit and any place you miss the paint will fall off. It is easiest to sand blast it but I would never sand blast around an assembled motor.

Thanks for the info, I am thinking it will be easier to pull the pan and rework it and then reinstall it after.

Agreed! I've painted chrome parts before, but sandblasting is the only way to get all the nooks and crannies roughed up so the paint sticks. Once blasted rough the paint will stick great!

Did yall use any special paint? Or just regular engine paint?
