502 oil pan capacity question?
Ok I have a 502 BB and i'm trying to figure out what capacity oil pan it is. The pan is about 24x7.75. The dept on the deep end is about 9 inches deep and one foot long. I can't find any numbers on this motor anywhere.

???? The best scientific way to really to know is to add oil to the engine till it's at the full mark on the dipstick, and keeping track of how many quarts you used to get to that mark.
If you can't find any aftermarket name/markings on the pan so you can look it up, then anything else is just a guess.

Jeez, gotta drag it outta you eh? Did you buy the engine new? Did you buy it from someone used? Did it already come in your car when you bought it? If you bought it that way, does the previous owner have any helpful info about it?
Does your 502 look like this? http://www.gmhorsepower.com/502-HO.php
The GM performance 502 comes with a 6 qt. pan. Someone may have put on the wrong dipstick. That or it may have put on a larger than 6 qt pan, but it would be a damn big one!

Ha sorry I bought the car with the 502. The guy I bought it from said the car had a 9 quart pan so I am pretty sure whatever he says is worth about as much as **** in a bucket. No the engine doesn't look like that. I would say its some sort of factory GM pan. I have 5.5 quarts in it right now runs good oil pressure and doesn't overheat or anything!

Yeah, and that Amsoil ain't cheap. Just off the top of my head, I'd say 5.5 qts is not enough. Even if the engine only had a 6 qt pan, you'd take a little more than that when you include the filter. The only thing your oil pressure gauge will tell you is when it's too late, if there isn't enough oil in the pan for it to recover in time. You might want to buy another dipstick and tube, just in case yours isn't the right one.

I was hoping that somebody with a 502 would chime in and measure there pan so I could compare measurements and then I could go off of what there pan is. But either way i'm at work so i'm not going to be able to get anything done until the morning. As for the Amsoil i'm a dealer so its not that bad. Well worth the price, in piece of mind!
