Dex-Cool Experiences Problems

A class action lawsuit filed in Kansas City alleges that General Motors factory-fill Dex-Cool coolant has caused rusty sludge to develop in cooling systems, leading to engine problems. The lawsuit seeks class-action status for consumers across the nation owning General Motors vehicles equipped with extended life Dex-Cool coolant.

For 1996 vehicles, GM warranted that Dex-Cool could be used for five years or 100,000 miles, increasing the warranty to 150,000 miles in 1997.

Millions of cars use Dex-Cool and have no problems. The only problem here is greedy lawyers trying to make money because of some cars that were poorly maintained or had other internal problems. Do you really think GM would use a coolant that is going to cause problems? I know this will generate many comments from those of you who think you are experts and know more that GM and Texaco engineers.

When Dex Cool came on the market, there was a warning that it should not be used in cooling systems containing copper as it would react with that metal and eat it away. Copper radiators have not been used in new cars for many years, but many older and modified cars do use copper radiators, and they should avoid using Dex Cool. Also there are service bulletins regarding 3.1 engines calling for different intake manifold gaskets because the coolant was dissolving the old type. In my experience, I have used Dex Cool in all my cars since 1994, and never had any problems, except for my son's 92 GP which had to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced.

I learned a long time ago that opinions do not equal fact. Most of us old as dirt people have learned that lesson but some still have to learn it the hard and expensive way! Whats with the attitude? Some are intimidated by people with knowledge and experience, are you one of them? Maybe it's you with the attitude! I run in a circle of friends who are engineers and experienced technicians and many would benefit from that knowledge base if they are humble enough to listen to them and not to those who just pass on opinions. Many of the Dex-Cool sludge issues are caused by radiator caps that do not work properly. The caps allow coolant to flow into the coolant reservoir but not allow coolant to flow back into the radiator when the car cools down. This creates an air intrusion issue and that air does not allow the coolant to properly protect those exposed metal surfaces and over time sludge appears. Also, a slight leak of combustion gasses into the coolant can cause issues. Mis-use of the coolant, including mixing it with the old style green coolant causes problems.

Hopefully this will settle the Dex Cool discussion. As anything else Dex Cool has its own particular problems.

As for GM engineers, they are the ones who designed the cooling systems that had the problems with the coolant that they designed. Could by why they can't make cars that people want to buy, and are looking to join forces with Renault? Renault! What are they thinking?
