A.I.R. smog pump removal

I've been hearing alot of people removing the smog pump on their 3rd gens. Can anyone that's done this answer the following?

1. Can you still pass emissions with the smog pump gone?
2. What kind of power gains did you see?
3. Are there any special mods that had to be done, or was it simply removing it and using a shorter belt?

Thanks
MAC

No you wont be able to pass emissions, im about to do mine and i just bought a set of shorty headers to replace the stock exhaust manifolds. If you dont replace they'll have small lines coming off of them so you'll have to plug the holes after taking them off.

The smog pump takes very little parasitic HP, so I'd leave it. With a serpentine system, you will need a delete pulley. The smog pump is your friend when it comes to emissions testing.

I've done it on my 91...
1. Yes, if your testing station doesn't give an under hood visual inspection.
2. None that I really noticed, I removed mine for cosmetic reasons.
3. No special mods, other than I put a spacer (short piece of pipe) in place of where the pump sandwiched into the front bracket, then reinstalled the long bolt. You take a chance of stress cracking the aluminum mount without that. No delete pulley needed either. And you need two plumbing caps (from your local hardware store) to cork off the check valves on the injector tubes. Or you can go further and try to get the tubes off the manifolds and plug the holes. You will need a LONGER serpentine belt, not a shorter one. Longer, because you route the belt in a different way that factory, but the accessories still turn in the right direction. If you're going that route, let me know. I'll look up the belt number you use, and the belt routing. If you're doing this to minimize the "stuff" under the hood for show, fine. But I wouldn't waste my time if your only hope is to gain power, you won't really.

Too bad it's buried so down low, you can hardly see it. ;)

OK then, plan B, rip it out! I haven't bothered to remove it but I did get rid of the v belt to it. I guess I just resent having it on the engine. :icon_spitball:

That's a bit easier when you have a separate belt to the pump, eh.

I still have smog pump on my 92 cause it is a serpentine system.:(
