engine loses power

i was coming down the road a little bit ago and my engine all of a sudden loses power. whenever i press the accelerator it loses power unless i slightly touch it, but anymore than that it will lose power and ultimately stall if i continu to hold it down. i dont know much about carburated engines. can someone shed some light on this. it would be greatly appreciated.

To me it sounds like you have a vacuum leak.
It has happened to me before, i had a broken vacuum hose and any time i wanted to hit the accelerator the rpm's did not want to go up much at all.
I would say check all your vacuum hoses
Check the carb gasket, and see if your carb is sealing to the intake manifold.
Also if you can listen to see if you even can hear a vacuum leak, and try and pin point the noise.
I hope this points you in the right direction.

Also sounds like possible flooding also if u have a carb I would turn down the jets.

The above mentioned suggestions are good. I would add checking the timing while you are there as well. If the dizzy has been messed with anytime in the recent past it might have not been tightened all the way and got out of sync. A decent timing light is about 20 bucks, I never thought I would need one that often, now I have friends come over for repairs and I use it all the time, it has effectively payed for itself allready.

well i can get the car moving, i just have to pump the gas. maybe a few centemeters of moving the gass in will give me a slight acceleration enough to get me up to 45. i dont know what it is. but i will go out now and check the vacuum lines.

i called pepboys and another local diagnostics place. they say its a carb problem. also i check all the cacuum lines. followed em all from point to point. and they are all secure. since im may be gettin a new carb, i might as well go all out with it. lol. im thinkin an edelbrock.
