car will crank but wont start
sorry i know this is a camaro forum and i have two camaros that run great its just my wifes car. its a 04 olds alero 4 cyl. and it has been giving me hell for a while now. about 2 months ago it started misfiring. i had it taken in to the garage and they replaced the coil pack and ICM. here about 3 weeks ago it just wouldnt start. the engine cranks but wont start. i thought it was the ICM so i replaced it and nothing. i have fuel pressure in the line, i havent checked the injectors. i have air and its a brand new coil pack and ICM. the spark plugs arent fouled. and i have no idea where the camshaft position sensor is on this car. partly because they dont make a chiltons for this car. any help would be greatly appreciated. and i know its not a camaro issue i just figure someone on this forum would know a great deal more than me. please help.
I don't even know what an alero looks like but I would assume it has a SES light. If so, have you scanned it for codes? Have you pulled a plug and checked to see if it is firing? I would start with that. Electronic parts may work right now and may not work in 10 minutes. Just the nature of them. Check the connections on the ICM to make sure no pins are bent. Hopefully someone else can give you better info with your problems.
i have an obd2 and i plugged it into the car but there was no light so the obd2 told me there were no trouble codes stored on the cars computer. none of the pins on the connectors are bent. the pins are on the ICM side and that is brand new and i also checked it. i just pulled the coil pack out and the ICM, put the plugs on the coil pack and tried to start the car with the stuff out to see if there was any spark and there wasnt a spark from any plug. i made sure the connections to the boots and coil pack were good and tried it again and still nothing. are coil packs known to go bad that fast? the part is less than 3 months old. its not the ICM because that is less than a month old. any more help would be appreciated thanks for the help so far.
How many coil paks does it have? Yes, a coil pak can go bad that fast, rarely but it can happen. If it is only one coil pak, that could explain why no spark but if more than one, highly unlikely. One other thing, check all the fuses in the car, on the dash panel and under the hood or where ever they are on that car.
i am assuming it only has one. it is a 4 cyl. and all the boots plug into one part if there are multiple packs in that one part i dont know. i have pulled all the fuses that i could find that deal with ignition and they all look good. do you know if there is a way i can test the coil pack to see if it is working properly? i suppose i could look up and try to see if there are multiple packs on one device.
4 cylinder, Sorry, I was thinking 6 cylinder. You only have one. On the coil paks for the camaros, there is a procedure to test their resistance on the primary and secondary with an ohm meter and I believe if you take the coil paks to a place like autozone or advanced, they can test them. So, do you just have 4 plug wires coming out of the coil and going to the plugs and the ICM plugging into the coil, no other connections?
On another note.......the obdII reader DID communicate with your car? no errors, just didn't pull up any codes? I am looking on Alldata right now and can't find any information for a "no start" I can find without a code.

The obd2 did link with the car and said that there were no trouble codes. The cars check engine light doesn't come on either which I think is weird.
There are no plug wires. The icm is screwed into the coil pack which sits right on top of the engine. The boots go straight from the coil pack to the plugs. I have looked up the testing for the coil pack and it says the ohms are unreadable for both the primary and secondary. I guess I could test it tomorrow but I think that it is going to come out good by the testing.

so guess what. figured out why the check engine light didnt come on. it was an issue with the security system. i looked it up online and found that lots of people with the same car around that mileage had problems with the security. i just had to put the key in turn the ignition to the on position for about 10 min. then turn it to the off position. after that it fired right up. thanks for your help osduck i really appreciate it and i'm glad i figured it out but pissed that i spent money on it before that. thanks again
