I think its set at 900rpm. I have noticed I can let off the gas and it will pull the car down the road around 25 or so.

Check your ignition timing.

[&:] there are several conditions that when combined tend to create run on or dieseling. 1) idle speed too high-- 600-750 rpm for most applications 2) idle mixture too rich and the biggest part hot carbon build up on the pistons, this acts as a spark plug so try to eliminate as many of these as you can and dieseling shouldnt be a problem anymore kurt

And the timing being off could be what creates the hot spots[8D]

It's a 79' and it has a 290hp 350. crate engine. Weiand intake and Edelbrock manual choke 600cfm carb. Any recommendations on timing?

Crate engines come with instructions from the manufacturer on timing. If you dont have it start with 0 and go from there. I would think it will probably end up somewhere near 5 - 10 degrees btdc.
