Break-in Procedure?

Default Break-in Procedure?

Hey, all.

I'm getting close to finishing a new engine install, and now I'm thinking about the break-in. After hours on google... I've determined that everyone has a different opinion, rangin from "baby it after you break the cam in", to "follow manufacturer guidelines", to even "HARD THROTTLE, ALL THE TIME."

I want to hear some real testimonies, from chevy guys. Any advice at all?

Specifically, the engine will be a Fuel Injected 350 Small Block Chevrolet. I noticed a lot of guides on the internet assumed I had a carb'd engine.

congrats! it's always exciting to get a new motor running. here's my two cents. i've broke in engines by taking it easy and with my last i drove it like i stole it. I haven't seen any difference b/t the ones i babied and my last motor.I really don't think there is a wrong way. Like you i spent alo of time researchng this question.Just use common sense and good oil.

I babied my new LT1 motor for the 750 miles or so and then turned it up a little bit for the last 750 miles so I could break it in both ways bc I heard different opinions about it as well. I also recommend using Joe Gibbs break-in oil. I don't think it is all that cheap, but I have heard great things about it from the one guy I work with who builds race cars.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I'm using Comp Cams break-in 10-30 weight oil that has zinc and other additives. Then after the first oil change, I will just use Valvoline and put in additives myself. I've gathered quite a bit of info and I have decided to blend the outlines of them, so to speak. I can't bring myself to drive it hard from the get go, but I'm not going to be a pansy with it the entire time either.

Assuming you have roller lifters,the main things is to keep the rings well lubricated. This is best done by not driving at a steady speed, but varying speed without using the brakes. Whenever the car decelerates in gear, engine vacuum increases and somewhat more oil is sucked into the cylinders, which helps with ring lubrication. Also avoid excessively high RPM and low RPM lugging.

Camaro 69- I found that page in my virtual travels, and I wasn't sure what to think about it. Have you ever used that method before? Any comments on what you think of it either way?
