Best way to replace valve seals.

How do i replace my valve seals wihtout pulling my heads. I heard you can blow air into the combustion chamber and it holds the valves up anyone ever tried it.

They make a fitting that screws into the spark plug hole that you hook up your air line from the air compressor to. There are different types of valve spring compressor tools made for this procedure. One that is simple to use is a bar type that hooks onto the rocker arm stud, then you pivot the tool down against the valve spring to remove the keepers. Check to make sure you have enough swinging room under the hood for that one. I'm sure Auto Zone has a tool to loan you. I was looking for a pic of a tool to show you, but came across this instead.

if you are leaving the timing cover on then yes, that is the best way. otherwise put some dowels in through the oil holes on either side of the cam

I'm trying to follow that one Spec. How does that prevent the valves from dropping down inside the cylinders?

whoops... sorry, i was talking lifters, and that is if the cam is out. my bad... friday night... u know [&:]
thx. you can do TDC (top deadcenter)as well. put a thin dowel into the spark plug hole and use it to feel when the crank is at the highest point. when its up there the valve cant move far so you can use ur spring compressor to remove the spring. for each tdc point 2 pistons will be at the top so know ur firing order. unless you have crazy low compression due to a very large chamber the piston itself will hold up the vlave.

use a wrench and turn over the motor in neutral until u find the 2 pistons at the highest point. swap them, then turn the crank 90 degrees. repeat till done

i just know that in my car the compressor thing was a pain in the ***, so i used TDC when swapping my valvetrain.

Time for another beer already? ;)
Another trick I've heard (but haven't used) is to feed some small rope down into the plug hole, then slowly turn the engine over to bring the piston and the rope upagainst the valves. My brother used the pivot-arm tool to replace the seals on his Camaro last year, but his is a '68 with a tad more working room.
