Default ABS INOP light and brake light stay on!

Hello everyone. My ABS inop and brake light come on and stay on every time I start the car. It has been doing this for several months. I was told by the dealership it needs a new EBTCM(electronic brake control module) and they wanted $1,000 to do it. I don't have that kind of money. I have found several places that sell the part for less than $100. Anyone know where this part is located, and if so, how to change it? Any help would be appreciated. Please email me at chrisrsnyder@gmsnyder.com if you can help.

I have the same problem in my 95. Mechanic quoted 500-600 to fix the problem. I'd like to find a cheaper fix but i'm not really comfortable with working on the ABS system. Help would be greatly appreciated.

If both the ABS and BRAKE lites come on, you have serious problem and should not be driving the car. However; make sure the hand brake is fully relased and not bringing the BRAKE lite on. Before replacing the ABS unit you should get the car scanned & find out exactly what is causing the ABS lite, as most problems are electrical in nature and can be taken care without replacing the ABS unit. You may want to install a rebuilt unit and save a bunch of money, not much harder than replacing a master cylinder.

Pete is right get it scanned. No one can tell you what it needs unless they do that first. All they are doing is throwning parts at it. It could be a simple wheel sensor.

If you still have a good firm pedal then the hydrolics are fine and you only have an electronics issue. The brake system will still function properly, but, it will only opperate in nonABS mode. I did'nt see what year your car was, but, most ABS codes automaticaly trip the brake MIL at the same time. Like everyone else suggests, pull the codes.
