400 SBC into 1968 RS
 

Currently I have a 327 that is the original motor so I'm getting ready to pull it and put a new one in. What I want to know if I get a 400 block will it fit into my Camaro without many modifications. And if any what would they be?

Physically, the 400 will bolt up like any other gen1 small block. It does have a few things different from other small blocks though. It's an external balance engine, so it uses a harmonic damper and flywheel/flexplate specific to a 400. Also, since the larger diameter cylinders were crammed into the confines of a small block, they are "siamesed" meaning they don't have a water jacket space between them, but they do have two steam holes between the adjoining cylinders. Because of that, you can't go throwing on any old small block heads without first having the heads drilled to match the steam holes in the block. Without them, the engine will run too hot, or worse.

Do you think there are any parts I could use from my 327? And how much money do you think it will be to make this engine put out about 400 hp/ft of lbs torque.. Im pretty tight on money right now. And sweet camaro you got btw! I've always wanted a blower!

Miscellaneous nuts and bolts, sheet metal parts, and acessories, otherwise every internal part has different measurements.

I'd consider rebuilding the 327. They were a great sbc. Or go 350. Which is more or less a stroked 327.

I would have to agree with Stevolwevol. The 327 is a great engine in it's own right but I would probably go with a 350. They make great power and there is nothing you would have to do with readily available components to make it work. Plus you can bore and stroke a 350 to a 383 and make huge amounts of all motor power and still have the cooling capacity of a 350. 400's tend to run a bit hotter even when configured correctly.
