Shifting on an Auto

I have been driving now for some years, but it wasn't until recently that I started driving my automatic.
I've read that putting the car in neutral to rev it up then throwing into drive for burnouts can jack up the car. Is that true?

Also since there is an option on the shifter to go into 1st and 2nd gear is it bad for the car if I throw it into first and **** to second during take offs for a little more speed control and then throwing it into drive?
I have just heard from some people close to me that doing those things is bad for the engine but I want to verify it with the pros.

Just power-brake it for the burnouts.

I've had it in first, second, then into Drive a few times. No problems, just wouldn't do it on a regular basis.

Looks like you have a 98-02 SS based on the avatar.

it's an 01 z28 convertible, and I loves it! lol that's why I'm wary on playin around with the shifting because I don't want to hurt the engine.

how do you power brake?

hold the brake and give it full throttle..then watch the tires roast :p

*dumb guy time* ok say i do that, the car kinda lurches forward when do that...so just hold the brake and stomp the throttle and then let go of the brake to roast them? lol ASR turned off also right?

powerbraking is just keeping the car in place while doing a burnout.

btw, i've ran my auto from D down to 1st gear before, as in downshifting while slowing down.

the car only lunges forward it its a manual, then you have to rev it up dump the clutch and quickly slam on the brakes..but for a auto just hold the brake and gas then after a little bit let off the brake and keep it floored until it stops spinning...the only downsides are your gonna fry your rear brake pads, and it puts stress on your drivetrain..

Spend the money on a line lock. Both SLP and Hurst make good kits for the F-body. Around 135 bucks and very easy to install and it will save your brakes.

When racing just put the car in drive and let the transmission do the rest.

launching in nuetral can cause you drivshaft to be thrown out your car and my brother use to race his camry that was an auto by shifting the gears manually like you said and he had the car a few months before the tranny blew up

You can never out shift a auto. Put it in drive and let the transmission do its job.
