Lets see your garages
Yeah its a little overkill but its cool. We are going to build a loft that will sit over the lift when we eventually get one installed, and use the loft for more storage space bc our attic and shed is full so we need more storage space as well. So the height of the roof isn't completely going to waste lol
maybe...but If I had it to do over, bigger, bigger, bigger......taller,taller,taller!!!
not for long especially in my family. about 6 years ago my grandparnet built a new house, 6 car garage and then later i helped my grandpa but up a little 1 car shop on the side so he could work out there. the garage layout was very kool at first. its two double doors wide and then set back on one side to hold 4 cars. on the just normal 2 car garage he set it up like a old diner, checkerd floor booths and tables from a local dairy queen. at the time the only cars we owned we a 33 ford pickup, 55 chevy 2dr hrdtp, my 68(in peices) and a if i remeber right a 57 chevy convertible. sold the 57 not long after that next thing theres a 61 impala ss, 34 ford 5 window coupe and a 06 blazer ss in the main garage filling it up along a few small blocks a 348 and other small parts then then the little shop is just full of tools and the 56 chevy custom and now we need more room again. go figure? havent been able to use the little "diner" in over 4 or 5 years now. i guess we are just pack rats that dont like to get rid of anything.
Good news, I am now building my garage, will post pics as the build goes on! Remember, This will be built by just 2 people, its 16ft wide, 24ft long, its going to make my other building look like a midget, and its 12x16 I dont know how high I'm going to make it, I know it WILL have a lift in it, Eventually.

Hi iCrossbone,
It's honorable that your building your own garage. I used to build pole barns 20 years ago (they're pretty simple) and off the bat, if you don't mind I have a couple of concerns with what I'm seeing in the picture you posted.
It looks like your existing roof must be around an 18/12 pitch and your new roof will be about a 3/12 pitch. You won't get much runoff with that low of a pitch and most shingles want a minimum of a 4/12 pitch unless you pan on roofing with tar or torch down. Assuming you get snow, your going to have a very, very heavy load of snow that's going to get caught on the lower roof due to the extreme transition.
Also it seems a bit far to be spanning with a 2x6's unless you plan on going 1 foot on center (I'm assuming you get snow where you live?) Also, your header should be a min of 2x12 and should be nailed and bolted to the posts, as well as another header that should be nailed and bolted to your existing garage (again, it looks like your using 2x6's? and you could use some extra support under that header so it's not relying soley on your garage wall.). Your gables should be flush with the end of your posts and nailed to your posts, and you'll need about a foot of over hang for soffit.
I'm assuming also that you'll be using joist hangers for your roof that will be going from the support header on your existing garage to the header across your poles?
I hope you don't take my criticism the wrong way. It's exciting to build your own garage so for what it's worth, .02
