Default V8 engine????

Wondering if anyone can help??? I live in Englnad and am at present looking at buying a 5.7L 350cc v8 chevy small block with a 350 turbo gearbox to fit into my 1986 chevy camaro the engine comes with all the extras e.g. alternator, pas pump, wiring loom and ecu etc. As American cars are a bit few and far between over here can anyone suggest anything i should be looking for or anything which is a common problem with these ebgines and gearboxes?? Thanks Goose

The 350 small block and the 350 turbo tranny are both pretty tough items, with no particular problems. It all depends how they were treated and maintained. If possible, pull the oil pan and take a good look at the bearings, and ans at the same time check the cylinder walls for wear. If the cylinder walls still show the hone marks, the engine should be in fairly good condition. It also would be good to do a compression test using the leak down method, where compressed air is introduced into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, and the amount of leakage measured. This will give a good indication of the state of piston rings, head gaskets, and valve seating.
