Roller Rockers... rock and roll
 

Hey guys, im thinkin about replacing my OE rockers and going to the rollers. the car is going to be a daily driver and it might see the track some day. im lookin for decent power gains in the low to mid, and maybe some high. I got a pocket full of questions about this topic. So consider me a noob.
Is it worth it (can you notice a change)?
Whats the deal with self aligning arms?
How hard would it be to do myself?
Should i replace anything else that goes in conjunction with the rocker arms (springs, pushrods, etc.)?
Should i stay with 1.5 ratios or go to 1.6?
I might be getting a cam soon...

I don't know the answers to all your questions, but I can help out with some. First off, it's really probably not worth it unless you put a new cam in the car, unless the rockers need to be replaced anyway, you won't get much power going from a regular to a roller rocker. You could see some performance gain if you went with a 1.6 rocker instead of a 1.5, but once again, with the stock cam performance gains will be minimal. Replacing the rockers by yourself shouldn't be an issue providing you have some technical knowledge, you won't have to worry about dropping valves into the cylinder or anything unless you swap out the whole valve train.

By their nature roller rockers will increase power output due to reduced friction losses, especially at high RPM. Using high lift roller rocker has two benefits, less friction and better breathing. The downside is that the valve springs will probably have to be replaced with stiffer ones to handle high RPM, and also there is a possibility of spring bind due to the additional lift.

cool! thanks. Also i have aftermarket Intake and exhaust. i heard that the combo of these with a new cam will be a great power increase. so while im at it replaceing the cam i might as wellreplace the valve springs, rockers with1.6:1 ratio, self aligning, roller rockers.Anything else?
Good idea? or bad?
Ill be happy for like 30 HP from this. am i dreamin?

Crane claims 25 HP average, but you have to remember that the power increasetakes place in the upper RPM range, so you won't notice that much off the line. Check to see if you need different lenght push rods.

yeah im hopin to get a cam that will increase low and mid range, i emailed tech dept at comp cams, and theyll get back to me. butabout the self aligning ones (does it mean self adjusting?)

Roller rockers won't do a thing to add power and make no difference unless you are using a big cam and/or stronger springs/bigger valves. Then its sort of a really good idea to have the added strength and stability of shaft-mounted roller rockers. I would not recommend increasing the rocker ratio if you plan to add a cam later. In fact, do nothing now, and add the cam, new springs, rockers, lifters and pushrods all at once -- as a compatible kit.
