Motor Oil

Motor Oil
All right, just for ****s and giggles, lets see what you guys have to say about this. If your motor is burning about a quart of 10w30 high milage oil, what would you do with out an engine over haul?
We have a 1994 Ford Aerostar with 240,000 original miles on the motor, trans, and rear axle.
I dumped 75w-90 cheap Murray's gear lube in there. It stopped burning oil. It burns about a quart of oil between oil changes now. I lost 2 MPG so what do you have to say about that? Go ahead speak your mind.

RE: Motor Oil
ive seen someone use 2 bottles of Lucas and it stopped the burning altogether heres the kicker, it was the lucas trans formula.
why gear lube? that would put some stress on the oil pump, maybee thats why the 2mpg loss?

RE: Motor Oil
Yes there is more strain for all the moving parts to move due to a higher surface tention of the oil. It actually stays in the upper end a lot more also. So it reduces dry start damage. Gear lube is pretty damn thick. I like it better than using straight 30,40,or 50 weight cuz the Murray's brand is cheap. $3/quart as oppsed to $5.50/qt. 15W-40 desiel oil still would burn about a quart ever 2.5 weeks.

The trans formula isn't as think, as it is made to thicken ATF, which is only a 10 weight, as oppose to motor oil, which is usually a 30 of some description. Plus, trans fluid cleans the motors oiling system.
Personally, -I- would run a compression test, wet and then dry, and find out where the oil's getting out.
Also, it's viscosity, not surface tension.

Well damn Norm, You just answered Your own question. I've had good luck with Kendall 60W oil that they use in Top Fuel. It's still a motor oil so it doesn't have any weird, damaging chemicals in it. Trans additives have alot of friction modifiers which is very abrasive to engines and gear lube is that thick because of the surface adhesion and having to climb up a gear without any pressure.

RE: Motor Oil
When in the Army, a buddy of mine had an old Saab that burned as much oil as it burned gas. Tired of feeding it engine oil, he started feeding it hypoid gear oil. The car still laid a smoke screen, but now the stench was intolerable. The car ran for about another week and then the engine seized. LOL

RE: Motor Oil
ok check it out, burning oil is either from the valve guides or from the rings. in rare cases it comes from a faulty intake gasket. before dumping oil and chasing that avenue i would check the guides and intake gasket first.
if you are totally convinced that it is the rings then you must try and re-seat the rings , which almost never works but when it does you look like a hero.
a re-seat attempt is borderline brilliant and borderline red-neck so you'll have to call me on that one !
