Default Engine Noise

I have a 350 small block... it's bored 030 over, timing is off so when you shut it off it runs backwards for a short time... i have to get to my parents to get that fixed... along with it running rich

the real problem is that now all of a sudden there it a knocking/ticking sound... it doesn't sound like a rocker tick really, but similar... it only seemed to do it in second and third gear... when i rev the engine with the clutch in in both those gears it doesn't do it... only under a load... the sound does not seem to be coming from the trans or the clutch but sounds like the engine and is in time with the exhaust sound

any ideas? burnt valve, bent push rod? anything?

thanks
-Fritz

Check for exhaust leak between heads and exhaust manifold.

With the knocking sound, and the run-on, it sounds like you may have some pre-detonation going on. Your ignition timing might be off, your engine could have a build up of carbon on the pistons or heads causing hot spots/glowing, you're using cheap gas, or any combination of all three.

the noise appears to be the transmission... there isnt any sound in any gear but 2nd... and its a clunk clunk clunk only when accelerating... it's a 4 speed... but i'm not sure what trans other than that... anybody know anything about transmissions? cause i dont have a clue... i can rebuilt an engine but a transmission is greek to me

found out its a Muncie 4 speed... 90% sure it's the clutch that's making the noise... not sure why and can't find anything that looks wrong underneath...

turns out the clutch was about shot... but that wasn't the thing making the noise...

while i had the transmission out of the car i decided to open up the side cover and take a look inside... I found metal flakes in the gear lube and upon inspection found that 2nd gear has 2 teeth broken off... so i gotta get a gear and replace it...

any advice for pulling apart a muncie 4 speed?

As a last resort, you can check out SK Speed Shop. They have parts and rebuild the old 4 speed boxes, but it won't be cheap.

Try Hawks Third Gen Parts in Easley South Carolina, they have a ton of those old 4 speed boxes...
