Coolant Fan inoperable

Hello All,
I have a 2001, 3800, 5 speed with a dual fan setup which recently stopped working. They will work with 12v applied directly. I have 2 questions regarding this problem.

1. When wired directly, should the airflow be directed toward the engine or toward the front of the vehicle.

2. I performed temp sensor and relay tests as stated in the Haynes manual and they perform as they should. The problem I am having is testing the relay plug-in block. I cannot determine which pins to test that the manual refers to. The crude diagram below represents the relay plugin block. The voltages shown are the same with the key on or off. The manual states "there should be power at all times on the number 1 socket and the number 5 socket should have power only with the key ON. I cannot determine which socket is number 1 or 5 as they are not marked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Have you checked the sensor for the fans. If it is not sending the PCM the signal to turn on the fans, they will not energize. I think the relays have small numbers on the bottom to tell you which prong is what number. Might have to use a magnifing glass to see them.
