Cold-Start Engine
I have a cold-start engine. In the winter when I go out to warm it up before school I always have a 50-50 chance of it either cranking till it turns over or I end up flooding it. Either way it'll sit there and crank for awhile until one of those two happen. What in the world can I do to stop this. NOTE: My mom is from Scotland and can't stand my "Ugly American Car" so I never get to put my car in the garage over her '03 Focus. So thats out.
im guessin its an 81 considering his name, so its prolly carburated. The carborated small block is a pain in the *** to start in cold weather. try pumping it a couple times, then leave your foot on the accelorator about halfway open, then crank it, if that dont work, give us some more details
Id make sure the tune was good and check if the heat riser to the air filter is still in place air filter is clean fuel filter is good ect.. I have never had too much of a problem starting in cold weather sometimes it does take figuring out the method the engine likes but I suspect it is in the tune or the coil is weak. How cold are we talking? On a side note they do make block heaters you plug in our van came with one stock it is in the rad hose.
Yah I have a 81 with a 305....and i have a Quadrajet carb on it...but Im about to order aedlebrock carb in a week or two....I could definetly use a good tune-up the engine is really needin one...
I know it is a spendy option, but I live in Iowa and the only way we could get my buddies 81 vette to fire in cold (0 degrees F or below) was a HEIdistributor and MSD ignition. After that upgrade, 2 pumps and if it didn't fire in 3 seconds something was wrong. So you could start with your plugs/ wires/ distributor/ ignition.
