97 Eclipse
 
Im looking at a 97 Eclipse with the 2.5 Liter V6 for my wife.
This car has a broken timing chain.

Does that mean I probably need a head? I know a lot of these cars had issues with damaging the head when the timing chain broke.

I know it is a rice burner, but if i don't get my wife what she wants, I don't get to spend money on my Camaro.

Price is right, and it looks to be a very clean car. Im ok replacing a timing chain, not sure if I want to rebuild the engine or not.

seemed weird to me but that is what the girl says.

Not really possible unless they did a swap. 2nd gens came with the 2.0L and rarely the 2.4L. They did not put the 2.5 in the eclipse. It went to a 2.4L or 3.0L option in 2001 and 2.4L or 3.8L in 2006. The galant,Diamante, etc had the 2.5L.

But if it is the 2.0L or 2.4Lthen yes you need to redo the head. They are interference engines. I have had a belt snap on my old 99 gsx and it had to be redone. I also have done a 97 and another 99 that I had to redo the heads. One snapped while it was at idle and still bent the valves.

Stay far, far away. Those cars are absolute crap. A V6 might possibly be a little better but don't even think about touching anything with the 4g63 l4 in it.

The one I used to have (a 91) cost me between $10-15k in a year, just to keep it running. And then I sold it for less than 1/6 what I bought it for.

actually that engine is stronger than the 4g64. it is setup to handle the boost great. honestly other than the belt snapping and the cam walk they are known for, our car has been very reliable. That car has 250k on it now and still kicking. but it is probably just a gs/rs which will have the 420A
