I have a 350 in my 67, but it was a crate engine put in around first half of the 90's. I want to start planning for building it up (keeping it running at least). How do I find out specific info for a drop in engine. I would imagine there is/are codes on the block or something.

Thanks.

there are casting numbers and on most vin numbers. casting number is casted into the block when its made and the vin or id numbers are stamped on the block. heres something that may help.

Step 1
Look at the rear of the engine block for casting numbers, by where the transmission mounts to the engine. There will be at least one set of numbers on the block. If you need to clean up the block to read the number, use the wire brush in combination with the degreaser.

Step
2
Write down that number, and go to MorTec.com. MorTec has a list of every casting number available, making research easy.

Step
3
Look for a second casting number on the rear of the block. This number isn't on every block, but if it is, it will represent the displacement of the engine. A 5.7L code, for instance, means it is a 350-cubic-inch engine.

Step
4
Look at the front of the block, just forward of the valve covers. There is a metal pad on the passenger side of the block that has a series of numbers etched in it. If necessary, clean up the pad with degreaser and a wire brush.

Step
5
Write down the code on the paper, and look it up on the MorTec website. MorTec also has reference codes for the front block numbers, which indicate at which plant the block was manufactured, and inwhat kind of car it was previously installed

It is a crate engine, but I'm sure there will still be the info minus the car specific stuff.

Thanks, I will let you know the results once I get to it.

10066036...350...........2 or 4...Target Master/Goodwrench crate motor, 2-piece rear seal, "Hecho en Mexico"

So that didnt really tell me too much, but I can look for the date code next. That site is a wealth of info though. Thanks again.

I think the date must have been right next to the number, there were somae dot codes, and a 93. I am guessing the dots are the day (since there were 2 sets 1,2,3 and a 1-10). 93 sounds about right for the timeframe the engine was bought.

Hmm now what to do with this info???

Good find. Thanks.

I need a new Carb, but figured why pay 300 for one when summit has a value pack tunnel ram dual quad setup for 700. Only problem is I want to keep my hood. But maybe I just breakdown and cut a hole in it.
