under dash computer located left of steering column, what is it? mines missing
 

Hello, new to lt1/ 4th gens. Needing some help. I picked up my second 4th gen, first ob2 car. I bought a 96 z28 shell, no motor trans or pedals, thought thats all that was missing. Long story short, 97 lt1/t56 going in with its computer. Been hearing bad things about the 96 computer. And i now have noticed the computer located just to the left of steering column is missing, what years can i replace this with? Any help would be awesome! I think its the bcm?If so does the vats run thru it?
