OBD1... right?
 

Hey guys, new to the forum, hell, new to the Camaro! (So go easy on me.) Have a quick question though nonetheless. Bought mine a few days ago, got it licensed and driving it now, anyhow, the second day I had it I was cruising along, mashing gears crazily trying to get used to the clutch and suddenly I had a Service light appear. I didn't freak out really, and I'm not trying to ask the question, "Why does my Check Engine light come on everytime I drive my car for several miles and then drops off when I start my car back up!?" The main thing I want to say here is that I brought her home and grabbed my trusty paperclip to figure out the diagnostics code... it didn't work. I definitely know that I had a good connection between the A & B terminals, but no fans kicked on, no lights flashed, nothing. And I thought this was an OBD1 car? Is there something that I'm not doing right here?

Sooo, after a Google search, it brought me here (hence the registration), but I found a forum basically saying that my car (94 Camaro 3.4 5 speed) is kinda like an OBD1.5 and that it required a Scan Tool and wouldn't accept a paper clip, is this truthful in any way?

And also, how the hell am I supposed to check this code!? If I go to Autozone, can they scan it for me, or am I gonna have to give in and buy and OBD1 Scan Tool (Or OBD2 with a 12-pin adapter)?

Unless you are dead-set on a handheld scanner, there are better ways to go. If you have a pc (laptop or desktop with a long USB extension) and buy/make an OBD1 cable ($20/$60) you have at least two options for a free pc-based scanner that can read trouble codes, reset them, read engine and transmission sensors and variables, and possibly read the ABS and SIR modules. One app is TunerProRT which is free with a nag screen (TunerPro and TunerPro RT - Professional Automobile Tuning Software). The scanner part is minimal, but with it you have the ability to modify the program in your PCM if wanted. The other is one I wrote, called Scan9495, which is specifically written for the 94 and 95 F-body cars and is all diagnostic capability (no programming/tuning) and is made to mimic the operation of a GM Tech1/Tech2 scantool.
