Default Instrument cluster help!

I've been trying to figure this out for a while, but some other forums not-to-be-named have offered me nothing in the way of help.
So first, the basics:
1989 RS, originally a 2.8V6/5speed manual converted to a carb. 305 from an '84 and a 700R4 (why??). It's been (mostly) made to look like a Z, complete interior redone, new body bits and pieces (not my doing!). Has a 145mph speedo, voltmeter, fuel gauge, and, 7k tach and a water temperature gauge and guess what? None of them work. Well, the speedo does.
As I understand it, these gauges are of the variable voltage variety (too many Vs!), the information from the sensors is sent to the PCM, and then to the instrument cluster... right? I've tested the gauges to the best of my knowledge, and the printed circuit on the back is in decent condition. All the lights work, as well.
The fuel gauge just kinda.. does what it wants.
The voltmeter seems to work, mostly (registers low)
The temp gauge does absolutely nothing other than moving up a slight bit with the ignition on, and will drop completely down if I unplug the two wire sensor on the thermostat housing.
And the tach does absolutely nothing.
Not worried about the oil pressure gauge, seeing as how I have a mechanical one equipped.
Is the swap from V6 to V8 going to effect things like this? Or did somebody screw something up? Any help/input/advice would definitely be appreciated!
