Default Carburetor Help

I just bought my 1969 Camaro. First thing I did was remove the carburetor and clean off forty years of carbon, oil, and grease. I put it back on, primed it with a little bit of fuel and went to start it. After a few tries I finally got it going, but it ran as if I had the pedal all the way to the floor. Basically, instead of idling at its normal speed, it was ten times that. I know I am getting fuel pressure to the carburetor, but the only way its starts is if i prime it, but every time I do, it red lines itself. Before I cleaned the carburetor it ran fine, no problems with the distributor or timing or anything. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them, because I am out of ideas.

Make sure you put the linkage back properly and not binding. Look inside & make sure you see the valves closing all the way. MAke sure the idle screws are adjusted properly, and all the vacuum lines and gaskets are in the right place. Since the car was running before it must be something you de-fixed, so recheck your work.
