96 camaro z28 PCM swap for a 97 camaro z28 pcm

Hello everyone,

I have a 1996 camaro z28 and ever since the day I bought the car, the speedo has been off by about 10 miles per hour, the tach is always about 500-600 rpm off, and even with a brand new trans installed, it still shifts on the soft side due to decreased line pressure. I have done much research and found that there was a TSB released for the 1996 LT1 computers which stated that there was a bad ground in the computer and there is a fix for the low line pressure and bad ground. The guy who I bought the car from must have tried to program the computer via hypertech programmer and didnt know what he was doing, so everything is off. The car runs fine somehow, but I want to get my gauges working correctly and line pressure up without having to use a jumper in the computer harness. I read that many programming companies dont even program 96 computers because of all the problems that they had, so they just replace the computer with a 97 version and program those. My question was, I wanted to completely remove my 96 LT1 camaro Z28 computer and swap in a 97 LT1 Z28 camaro computer. Can this be done as long as my vin is programmed into the 97 computer? Are there certain serial numbers that I have to look for when choosing the new computer? Do i have to take the knock sensor from my existing computer and swap it into the 97 computer? I really appreciate all your help. Any insight into this problem would be of great help. Thanks.
