rim sizes and drivability
 

Hello all. Ok so i have a 1995 z28. When i bought the car the previous owner put 20 inch rims on the car. :icon_doh: the rear tire size is 285/35/20. the front is 255/40/20. when i make a sharp turn the tires scrape pretty badly,:icon_doh: also when i go over bumps in the road if i have more then just me in the car the back tires hit the fender well. I have heard that 20 inch rims slow down our cars quite a bit. The previous owner said it has "custom suspension" . i think that it is lowered however I am not sure how much. I want to get new tires and rims that are smaller, either 18's or 17's. do you guys have any suggestions on what size of rim i should get due to the fact that the car is probably lowered? and what size of tire do you guys usually go with?

I run a 265/35/R18 in the Rear and a 235/35/R18 up front.

That's as large as I'd ever go on a 4th gen, in terms of wheel Diameter.

Probably wouldn't go larger than 18".

I have 17" SS wheels (275/40/17) and they are arguably "overkill" for my V6.

thanks for you input guys. how would 275/35/18 be for turning in the front? would it scrape when making tight turns?

Should be ok - my 275/40/17's don't rub - and they're roughly the same rolling diameter.

thats pretty huge for the front. i think itll rubs nicely when turning.

what is the width of a rim that would fit a 275?

well i have stock corvette c5 wagon wheels. they are 17x9.5 in front and 18x10.5 in rear. The tires i have on them are 255/40/17 in front and 295/30/18's in the rear. My car is lowered just over an inch on eibach prokit springs. I also have 1/2" wheel spacers in the rear. On my rear tires the outside would rub on the inside of my fender well. All i did was took a rubber mallet and hammered the point in which the inner fender well and the outside fender meet up a lil bit and out of the way. Grantid the eibach prokit springs are fairly mushy as far as spring rate goes, if i had a stiffer spring this would not be an issue.

The i have seen an ss ls1 with 275's all the way around. Not sure if they came stock like that or not, somebody please correct me if they didnt. And i wish i wouldve been able to find out if they rubbed or not for him. Those were on 17 inch rims btw. My fronts do not rub either.

As far as putting 20 in rims on... yes they are going to take away from performance. Because being a larger/taller rims it will take more umph(torque) to get them rolling. Such as if you try rolling a small snowball versus and very large snowball on the ground. It take more leverage to move it. They also weigh considerably more so it just kills your power getting put down on the pavement signifigently.

I do believe a 9.5 rim should fit a 275. Seeing as how i had a 265 fitted on the stock 8 in salad shooters. I think they're 8 in. lol i guess i never really cared to check. Any stock/replice corvette wheel will fit a 275. As far as i know. I also would not advise doing a 275 on an 18 in rim in the front. That is a whole lot of rim and tire to try and fit in that wheel well if it is lowered. The tire/rim combo i have on my car currently is pushing room in the front wheel well. I also think it is a fairly shared belief that staggered rim size compliment the lines of the camaro quite well.

Thank you CamaroKid16 your reply helped alot. Now I have to decide if I want to go with 17" rims or 18". Any suggestions? I would also like to have the same size rim all the way around not staggered (no offense I just think that it will be easier buying them that way and for buying tires for them in the future)
