v6 rasp...where does it really come from?
I know all about the fact that these v6's have, imo, a terrible raspy sound when they rev high. A little youtube research and I found out that the 4.3l v6 they put in the trucks has little to no rasp when compared to our v6's. My question has been for the longest time where does that sound ACTUALLY come from.
And yes I know there are some aftermarket exhaust things you can do to cut way down on that rasp, but i'm looking for a way...and it doesnt have to be cheap...to completely get rid of it.
The research I have done seems to point to the size and shape of the combustion chamber. The videos on the 4.3l v6 seem to point in this direction.
Thought or opinions?

The 3.4 V6 "rasp" is from the chipmunks having indigestion!
The 4.3 is just a sawed off 350. I crammed one into a Suzuki Samurai once, and the dual exhaust gave it a nice rumble.
So, you're going to reinvent the exhaust system to give the engine a beefier sound?

haha chipmunk. Well the 4.3 being a sawed off 350 makes sense with the sound. Do you think that fits with my size and shape of the combustion chamber as it relates to the sound question?
Not 100% sure what i want to do, but sometimes the wheel has to be reinvented to function better. Well maybe not the wheel...the circle is pretty good for that, no reinvention needed. But my crappy 3.4 maybe some reinventing is warrented there.
Well mine has almost no rasp anymore. It had a ton with the flowmaster and no cat...but i had a thrush glasspack welded in place of the cat ad it solved all my issues
now it sounds lovely

agreed i put a glasspack in place of the cat on my 3.4 and the rasp went away for the most part
The basic sound of an engine is mostly determined by the number of cylinders, firing order, and valve timing. Different exhaust systems will produce a different tone, but the basic sound remains. A screaming six cylinder, such as the engine in a 911 Porsche, sounds pretty good to me. lol
i just put flowmaster dual exhaust cat back on and i HATE THE RASP!!! its so frustrating..... i would love a video of the glaspack if possible in place of the cat because i will do that if it works
