Oil Sending Unit Replacement
New to the forum here. I noticed the other day that I had a leak from the oil sending unit. Went to get an estimate because I moved across the country and don't have any tools or garage at my new place to work on it. They wanted approximately $175 to replace it. Seemed pretty steep to me. I looked into it and can pick the part up for around $30, however I have never replaced one of these before. Any ideas of what it should cost to get it done at a shop? Is $175 even in the right ballpark? I think I may just try to do it myself if I can get my hand on a jack. Has anyone done it themselves before? Pretty easy?

It just screws in. You can do it yourself and save $130. It might take you ten minutes after you locate it! I haven't had anyone work on my cars in so long, I don't even know what the hourly repair rates are any more.

If it is a 3.8, raise the hood and look down at the front of the motor where the oil filter is located. The sending unit is right there beside it. Just unplug the wire, unscrew the sensor, screw in the new one and plug the wire back up. There will be a few drops of oil come out of the hole but no worries. Just wipe it off.

Thanks guys! Picked up the part this afternoon and it took all of 10 minutes, actually probably not even that long. What rip off garages are on such an easy fix. 3/4 an hour labor for something that would take them 5 minutes. Saved myself $145!!!

Agreed. Mine was taken out by a shredded belt, and the forums had me runnin in no time.

After I replaced the oil sending unit, I noticed that my oil pressure was higher than it normally had been. Its reading a pretty consistent 90-100, where it was normally around 60 before. I know the reading before probably was not very accurate if I was leaking from it, however 90-100 seems a bit high. I don't think I have a spun bearing or anything because the engine is running fine and not making any noise. My guess is maybe the gauge is off, my understanding is they are pretty inaccurate to begin with. Just seems weird to have such a big jump up. Any thoughts?
